he Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden

Korean Folktale

Episode 1

The Poor Woodcutter

Long ago, deep within the mountains of Korea, there lived a poor young woodcutter.

Every day he climbed the steep mountains, cutting firewood to sell in the village.

Though he worked hard, he remained poor.

He lived alone.

With no family.

No wife.

And no hope for a better future.

Yet despite his hardships, he possessed a kind and honest heart.

He never harmed anyone.

And he respected all living creatures.

Little did he know that his kindness would soon change his destiny forever.

Episode 2

The Deer’s Secret

One day, while gathering wood, the young man heard desperate cries echoing through the forest.

A frightened deer burst from the bushes.

Behind it came a hunter with a bow and arrow.

The deer ran straight to the woodcutter.

“Please save me!” it cried.

Moved by compassion, the woodcutter quickly hid the deer behind a pile of rocks.

Moments later, the hunter arrived.

“Have you seen a deer?” he demanded.

The woodcutter shook his head.

The hunter searched but found nothing.

Frustrated, he finally left.

The deer emerged safely.

It bowed its head in gratitude.

“You have saved my life,” said the deer.

“I shall repay your kindness.”

Episode 3

The Heavenly Pond

The deer revealed a secret.

High in the mountains lay a hidden pond.

A sacred place where heavenly maidens descended from the sky to bathe.

“They leave their magical feather robes beside the water,” explained the deer.

“If you hide one robe, the maiden who owns it cannot return to Heaven.”

The woodcutter hesitated.

The idea felt wrong.

But the deer insisted.

“If you marry her, your loneliness will end.”

After much thought, the woodcutter followed the deer’s instructions.

Episode 4

The Maiden from Heaven

The next day, the woodcutter hid among the trees near the pond.

Soon, a brilliant light filled the sky.

Several heavenly maidens floated down upon clouds.

They removed their feather robes and entered the sparkling water.

When the maidens were distracted, the woodcutter carefully hid one robe.

After bathing, the maidens prepared to leave.

One by one they soared back into the heavens.

Except for one.

A beautiful maiden searched desperately.

“My robe! Where is my robe?”

She could not return.

She was trapped in the world of humans.

Episode 5

Love on Earth

The woodcutter stepped forward and revealed himself.

At first, the maiden was frightened.

But the woodcutter treated her with kindness and respect.

Over time, she came to trust him.

Eventually, the two married.

Years passed.

They had children together.

Their home became filled with laughter and happiness.

The woodcutter believed his dream had finally come true.

Yet deep inside, the maiden still missed Heaven.

Every night she gazed at the stars.

Wondering if she would ever see her heavenly home again.

Episode 6

The Broken Promise

Before helping him, the deer had given one warning.

“Never return the feather robe until your children are old enough.”

The woodcutter promised.

For years he kept the robe hidden.

But one day, seeing his wife’s sadness, his heart softened.

He brought her the feather robe.

“Just try it on,” he said.

“I trust you.”

The moment the robe touched her shoulders, a radiant light surrounded her.

The heavenly power returned instantly.

The maiden looked at her husband with tears in her eyes.

Then she gathered their children into her arms.

Slowly, she began rising toward the sky.

Episode 7

The Journey to Heaven

Desperate, the woodcutter cried out.

“Please don't leave me!”

The maiden felt pity.

She lowered a magical rope from the heavens.

The woodcutter climbed up and joined his family in Heaven.

For a time, they lived together happily.

But Heaven was not a place for mortals.

The heavenly beings looked down upon him.

He never truly belonged there.

Episode 8

The Fall

One day, the woodcutter wished to visit Earth.

The heavenly maiden lent him a magical horse.

“Whatever happens,” she warned,

“Do not look down.”

The horse flew through the clouds.

As he crossed the sky, the woodcutter glanced below.

He saw his old village.

His old life.

His old memories.

Overcome with longing, he looked down once more.

Instantly, the magic broke.

He fell from the heavens.

Down.

Down.

Down to Earth.

Never able to return again.

Episode 9

The Eternal Separation

The woodcutter searched for a way back.

But Heaven remained forever beyond his reach.

Some versions say he became a rooster.

Others say he became a lonely star in the night sky.

Still watching his wife and children from afar.

Waiting for a reunion that would never come.

Ending Narration

And so the tale of the Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden became one of Korea’s most beloved folktales.

A story of love.

A story of trust.

And a reminder that some worlds are never meant to be joined forever.

Yet even today, when people look up at the stars,

they remember the woodcutter who loved a maiden from Heaven.

And lost her.

Forever.

Years later, as the woodcutter lived alone once again, the deer returned.

The deer told him that if he went back to the sacred pond, a heavenly bucket would descend from the sky.

Filled with hope, the woodcutter hurried to the pond.

Just as the deer had promised, a magical bucket came down from Heaven.

The woodcutter climbed inside and was lifted into the sky.

At last, he was reunited with his wife and children.

For a time, the family lived together happily in Heaven.

But the woodcutter could not stop worrying about his aging mother on Earth.

Seeing his concern, his wife agreed to let him visit her.

She gave him a magnificent Heavenly Horse.

“Ride this horse down to Earth,” she said.

“You may visit your mother, but no matter what happens, do not step off the horse and do not let your feet touch the ground.”

The woodcutter promised.

He rode the Heavenly Horse down through the clouds and returned to his village.

There, he finally reunited with his beloved mother.

Overjoyed to see her son again, she prepared his favorite meal — a bowl of sweet red bean porridge.

The woodcutter eagerly began to eat.

But the porridge was still too hot.

As he tried to cool it, some of the hot porridge accidentally spilled onto the Heavenly Horse.

Startled by the sudden heat, the horse reared up in terror.

The woodcutter lost his balance and fell to the ground.

The moment his feet touched the Earth, the magic was broken.

The Heavenly Horse immediately soared back into the sky and disappeared among the clouds.

The woodcutter cried out and chased after it.

But it was too late.

The gate between Heaven and Earth had closed forever.

He would never see his wife and children again.

Overwhelmed by grief and loneliness, the woodcutter was transformed into a rooster.

And from that day forward, every morning before dawn, he stretched his neck toward the heavens and crowed.

His cries echoed across the world.

Some say he was calling for his wife.

Others say he was searching for the family he had lost.

And even today, when a rooster crows at daybreak, people remember the lonely woodcutter who longed for Heaven and the loved ones he could never see again
