MABUJAKCHIM (磨斧作針) Grinding an Axe into a Needle

Grinding an Axe into a Needle

Long ago, during China's Tang Dynasty, there lived a young man named Li Bai.

Even as a youth, Li Bai possessed extraordinary intelligence and talent. Many believed he was destined for greatness.

Yet talent alone was not enough.

The years of study were long and difficult.

Day after day, he spent countless hours reading, writing, and memorizing lessons in a mountain academy.

Over time, he grew tired.

The books seemed endless.

The effort felt overwhelming.

And the dream of becoming a great scholar appeared farther away than ever.

Eventually, Li Bai lost heart.

One day, frustrated and discouraged, he packed his belongings and decided to abandon his studies forever.

As he walked down the mountain path, he felt relieved.

At last, the burden of learning was behind him.

Or so he thought.

Along the way, he came upon a quiet stream.

There, beside a large stone, sat an elderly woman.

She was working with intense concentration, rubbing a large piece of iron against the surface of the rock.

Curious, Li Bai stopped to watch.

Hour after hour, the old woman continued her work without rest.

Finally, Li Bai stepped closer and asked,

“Grandmother, what are you doing?”

Without looking up, the woman calmly replied,

“I am making a needle.”

Li Bai was astonished.

A needle?

He looked more carefully.

The object in her hands was not a small metal rod.

It was a massive iron axe.

Unable to believe what he had heard, Li Bai laughed.

“How can anyone turn such a huge axe into a tiny needle?”

The old woman finally looked up and smiled.

Then she answered,

“If I grind it every day and never stop, one day this axe will become a needle.”

Her words were simple.

Yet they struck Li Bai like lightning.

Suddenly, he understood.

The problem was not that his goal was impossible.

The problem was that he had been unwilling to continue.

If an old woman could transform a giant axe into a needle through patience and persistence, then surely he could overcome the difficulties of study.

Great achievements were not created in a single day.

They were built through countless small efforts repeated over time.

At that moment, Li Bai's heart changed.

Filled with renewed determination, he turned around and climbed back toward the mountain academy.

This time, he would not quit.

Years passed.

Li Bai devoted himself completely to learning, writing, and perfecting his craft.

He studied tirelessly.

He practiced endlessly.

Slowly but surely, his talent blossomed.

His poems spread throughout the empire.

People were captivated by the beauty, imagination, and brilliance of his writing.

Eventually, Li Bai became one of the most celebrated poets in Chinese history.

Generations would remember him as the “Immortal Poet.”

The lesson of Mabujakchim has endured for centuries.

What appears impossible today may become possible tomorrow.

Not through talent alone.

Not through luck.

But through patience, perseverance, and the courage to continue when others give up.

Every masterpiece begins with a single stroke.

Every mountain is climbed one step at a time.

And every great achievement begins with a small effort repeated day after day.
