SAEONGJIMA
The Old Man Who Lost His Horse
Long ago, near the northern frontier of ancient China, there lived an old man known for his wisdom and calm nature.
One day, his beloved horse suddenly ran away and disappeared beyond the border into foreign lands. When the villagers heard the news, they came to comfort him.
“What terrible misfortune!” they said.
But the old man simply smiled and replied,
“Who knows? Perhaps this will turn out to be a blessing.”
The villagers were puzzled by his response.
Several months later, the lost horse returned.
To everyone's surprise, it was accompanied by a magnificent wild stallion.
The villagers rushed to congratulate the old man.
“What great fortune!” they exclaimed.
Yet the old man remained calm.
“Who knows?” he said.
“Perhaps this will turn out to be a misfortune.”
Again, the villagers could not understand his strange way of thinking.
Not long afterward, the old man's son began riding the powerful stallion.
One day, he was thrown from the horse and badly injured his leg.
The villagers once again came to offer sympathy.
“What terrible luck,” they said.
But the old man remained as calm as ever.
“Who knows?” he replied.
“Perhaps this will become a blessing.”
The following year, war broke out across the land.
Imperial soldiers arrived at the frontier village and drafted all the young men into the army.
Most of them never returned.
But because the old man's son had injured his leg, he was not taken to war.
His life was spared.
Only then did the villagers finally understand the old man's wisdom.
What first appeared to be misfortune had become a blessing.
And what seemed to be good fortune could easily have led to disaster.
No one can fully predict the twists and turns of life.
Fortune and misfortune often arrive hand in hand, each transforming into the other over time.
The story of Saeongjima reminds us not to become overly proud in times of success, nor overly discouraged in times of hardship.
Life is constantly changing.
What seems like a setback today may become tomorrow's greatest opportunity.
And what appears to be a blessing may contain unexpected challenges.
True wisdom lies in remaining calm, patient, and steady through both good times and bad.
For in the end, no one truly knows what tomorrow will bring.
