This dish is especially popular because it is a great way to use leftover rice and ripe kimchi. With just a few ingredients and a fried egg on top, Kimchi Fried Rice becomes a complete and delicious meal.

If you enjoy bold Korean flavors and quick comfort food, this recipe is a perfect place to start.

What Is Kimchi Fried Rice?

Kimchi Fried Rice is a classic Korean rice dish made by stir-frying cooked rice with chopped kimchi, kimchi juice, onion, and seasonings. Many people also add gochujang for extra heat and deeper flavor.

The dish is often topped with a sunny-side-up fried egg and finished with green onions, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. The result is a rich, flavorful meal that is both simple and deeply satisfying.

In Korean homes, Kimchi Fried Rice is one of the most common ways to turn leftover ingredients into something delicious.

Preparation Information

  • Servings: 2 to 3
  • Preparation time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking time: 15 minutes
  • Total time: 25 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients

For the Fried Rice

  • 3 cups cooked rice, preferably day-old
  • 1 cup kimchi, chopped
  • 2 tbsp kimchi juice
  • 1/2 small onion, diced
  • 2 stalks green onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp gochujang (optional)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

For the Sauce / Seasoning

  • 1 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp kimchi juice, or more to taste
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp gochujang (optional, for extra heat)

Instructions

Step 1: Stir-fry the Onion and Kimchi

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat.

Add the diced onion and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until it becomes soft and slightly translucent.

Add the chopped kimchi and 2 tablespoons of kimchi juice. Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until the kimchi becomes fragrant and slightly softened.

This step helps deepen the flavor of the kimchi and forms the base of the dish.

Step 2: Add the Rice and Seasoning

Add the cooked rice to the pan.

Pour in the seasoning mixture made with soy sauce, kimchi juice, sesame oil, and gochujang if using.

Use a spatula to gently break apart any rice clumps so the rice mixes evenly with the kimchi and sauce.

Step 3: Mix and Stir-Fry

Continue stir-frying everything together for about 3 to 4 minutes.

Mix well until the rice is evenly coated with the sauce and takes on a beautiful red-orange color.

If you like slightly crisp fried rice, let the rice sit in the pan for short moments before stirring again.

Step 4: Fry the Eggs

Push the rice to one side of the pan, or use a separate frying pan.

Add a little oil and fry the eggs sunny-side-up, or cook them however you prefer.

A runny yolk is especially delicious because it mixes into the rice and adds extra richness.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

Transfer the Kimchi Fried Rice to serving bowls or plates.

Top each portion with a fried egg.

Sprinkle with chopped green onions and sesame seeds, then drizzle lightly with sesame oil if desired.

Serve hot and enjoy.

Tips for the Best Kimchi Fried Rice

Use Day-Old Rice

Day-old rice works best because it is drier and firmer, making it easier to stir-fry without becoming mushy.

If you only have freshly cooked rice, let it cool first so it becomes less sticky.

Use Well-Fermented Kimchi

Older, more fermented kimchi usually gives the best flavor because it is tangier and more intense.

Fresh kimchi can still be used, but the final dish may taste a little less bold.

Adjust the Spice Level

If you want a milder version, reduce or skip the gochujang.

If you want it spicier, add extra gochujang or a little gochugaru, Korean red pepper flakes.

Do Not Overcrowd the Pan

A large pan or wok helps the rice fry more evenly and prevents steaming.

Finish with Sesame Oil

A small drizzle of sesame oil at the end adds wonderful aroma and classic Korean flavor.

Optional Add-Ins

Kimchi Fried Rice is easy to customize. You can add:

  • Spam
  • Bacon
  • Ham
  • Ground beef
  • Tuna
  • Chicken
  • Tofu
  • Mushrooms
  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Cheese
  • Roasted seaweed strips

Many people love adding diced Spam or a sprinkle of shredded cheese for an extra comforting version.

What to Serve with Kimchi Fried Rice

Kimchi Fried Rice is a complete meal on its own, but it also pairs well with:

  • Korean fried egg
  • Kimchi soup
  • Pickled radish
  • Korean dumplings
  • Stir-fried vegetables
  • Roasted seaweed
  • Simple salad
  • Korean fried chicken

For a more traditional Korean-style meal, serve it with small side dishes and extra kimchi.

Why People Love Kimchi Fried Rice

Kimchi Fried Rice is loved because it is:

  • Quick and easy to make
  • Budget-friendly
  • Full of bold flavor
  • A great use for leftover rice and kimchi
  • Easy to customize
  • Comforting and satisfying

It is one of those dishes that feels simple but tastes deeply flavorful.
