Bari : The Princess Who Returned From the Land of the Dead

Legends of Korea

Bari : The Abandoned Princess Who Defied Death

(바리공주)

Episode 1

Long ago, in an ancient kingdom of Korea, a king desperately wished for a son.

He already had six daughters.

When the queen became pregnant again, the entire kingdom prayed for a prince.

But fate had other plans.

The seventh child was born.

Another daughter.

The king was furious.

Believing the child to be a curse upon his dynasty, he ordered the newborn princess to be abandoned.

Her name became Bari.

The Abandoned One.

The infant was placed in a box and cast away from the palace.

Everyone expected her to die.

But destiny had chosen a different path.

Episode 2

A poor elderly couple discovered the baby.

They had no children of their own.

They raised Bari with love and kindness.

Years passed.

Bari grew into a brave and compassionate young woman.

Far away in the royal palace, however, tragedy struck.

The king and queen became gravely ill.

No doctor could save them.

No medicine worked.

Then a mysterious prophecy appeared.

Only the Water of Life from the Land of the Dead could cure them.

And only the abandoned seventh daughter could bring it back.

The daughter they had thrown away.

Episode 3

Messengers searched across the kingdom.

Eventually they found Bari.

For the first time in her life, she learned the truth.

The king and queen were her real parents.

The parents who had abandoned her.

The six princesses were asked to make the journey.

Every one of them refused.

The road led beyond the world of the living.

No one expected to return.

Then Bari stepped forward.

"I will go."

Everyone was stunned.

Why would she save the people who had discarded her?

Bari answered only one thing.

"Because they are still my parents."

Episode 4

Bari crossed deserts.

She climbed mountains.

She wandered through endless darkness.

At last she reached the boundary between life and death.

There she encountered strange spirits and guardians.

The keeper of the Water of Life demanded a terrible price.

Years of labor.

Years of sacrifice.

Years of suffering.

Bari accepted.

Day after day.

Year after year.

She endured every hardship.

Never giving up.

Never turning back.

Episode 5

At last the Water of Life was hers.

Bari hurried home.

But she was too late.

The king and queen had already died.

Their funeral procession filled the roads.

The kingdom wept.

Bari ran toward the royal coffins.

With trembling hands she sprinkled the sacred water.

A miracle occurred.

The dead king opened his eyes.

The queen breathed again.

Life returned.

The entire kingdom fell silent.

Then erupted in joy.

The abandoned daughter had done the impossible.

She had conquered death itself.

Episode 6 (Ending)

The king begged Bari to stay and become the kingdom's greatest princess.

But Bari chose a different path.

Having traveled between the worlds of the living and the dead, she had become something more.

A guide for lost souls.

A bridge between worlds.

According to Korean tradition, Bari became the first great shaman and protector of spirits.

Even today, her story is remembered as one of courage, sacrifice, and forgiveness.

Because sometimes...

The child who was abandoned becomes the one who saves everyone.
