South Korea’s Premier Defense Systems Series ⑩

The ROK Navy’s Three Generations of Fast Coastal Combatants

Chamsuri-Class PKM · Yoon Young-ha-Class PKG · PKMR/PKX-B

The Republic of Korea Navy operates several types of small, high-speed combat vessels designed for coastal surveillance, Northern Limit Line security, interception of infiltration craft, protection of fishing activity and rapid response to maritime provocations.

The three vessels represent different generations and missions:

  • Chamsuri-class PKM: The older gun-armed coastal patrol boat
  • Yoon Young-ha-class PKG: A larger fast attack craft armed with anti-ship guided missiles
  • PKMR/PKX-B: A new guided-rocket patrol boat replacing the aging PKM fleet

The program names require careful distinction:

  • PKX-A, also called Geomdoksuri-A: Developed into the Yoon Young-ha-class PKG
  • PKX-B, or Geomdoksuri-B: Developed into the new PKMR patrol boat

1. PKMR / PKX-B

South Korea’s New Guided-Rocket Patrol Boat

The PKMR was developed to replace the aging 150-ton Chamsuri-class PKM.

Its official designation means:

Patrol Boat Killer Medium, Rocket

The new boats retain the Chamsuri name and use hull numbers such as PKMR-211 and PKMR-231. They combine high speed with a 76mm naval gun, 130mm guided rockets, remotely operated machine guns and modern electronic-warfare equipment.

130mm Guided Rockets

The 130mm guided-rocket system was designed to engage fast-moving targets such as:

  • Hovercraft
  • Landing craft
  • Infiltration boats
  • Small fast attack craft
  • Groups of approaching coastal targets

It fills the capability gap between short-range gunfire and more expensive full-sized anti-ship missiles.

Waterjet Mobility

Waterjet propulsion provides rapid acceleration and maneuverability while reducing the risk of damage from fishing nets and submerged obstacles.

This is especially valuable in the shallow, crowded waters near South Korea’s western coastline and offshore islands.

Batch-II Improvements

Batch-II retains the general size, speed and armament of Batch-I while improving:

  • Combat-system integration
  • Guided-rocket and remote-gun control
  • Anti-jamming capability
  • Electronic-warfare response
  • Crew convenience
  • Habitability and maintenance access

The first four Batch-II vessels were launched in December 2025 and were scheduled for delivery between August and November 2026. Contracts covering 16 Batch-II vessels had been placed by the end of 2025.

2. Yoon Young-ha-Class PKG

South Korea’s Missile-Armed Fast Attack Craft

The Yoon Young-ha class was developed following lessons from coastal confrontations, particularly the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong.

The first vessel honors Lieutenant Commander Yoon Young-ha, who was killed during the 2002 battle. The first six ships were named after the six ROK Navy personnel who lost their lives in the engagement.

Anti-Ship Missile Capability

Unlike the original Chamsuri boats, which relied primarily on close-range guns, the Yoon Young-ha class can engage larger enemy vessels from beyond gun range using anti-ship guided missiles.

The 76mm gun and secondary weapons provide firepower against smaller or closer targets.

Domestic Combat System

The class introduced a domestically developed combat system that combines radar, electro-optical sensors, electronic warfare, weapons and communications.

This allows the crew to detect, identify, prioritize and engage targets through a coordinated system rather than operating each weapon separately.

Mid-Life Upgrade

All 18 vessels entered service between 2008 and 2018.

A modernization program launched in 2024 is scheduled to continue through 2030. It includes:

  • Improved search radar
  • Upgraded electro-optical tracking
  • A more capable missile-decoy system
  • Remote-controlled 12.7mm weapons
  • Replacement of aging and discontinued equipment
  • Improved close-combat effectiveness and survivability

3. Chamsuri-Class PKM

The Historic Coastal Patrol Boat

The 150-ton Chamsuri-class PKM served for decades as one of the Republic of Korea Navy’s principal coastal-defense vessels.

The boats were fast, compact and heavily armed for their size, normally operating in coordinated patrol formations close to the coastline and Northern Limit Line. More than 100 were constructed in several production groups, resulting in differences in weapons and equipment between individual boats.

StatusGradually being replaced, with some boats still in use

A 2025 ROK Navy training report confirmed that Chamsuri boats were still conducting frontline surveillance and live-fire exercises with crews of approximately 30.

Close-Range Gun Combat

The Chamsuri class was designed before guided weapons and remote-control systems became standard on small naval craft.

Its main weapons required the vessel to approach relatively close to the target, exposing the boat and its crew to enemy gunfire.

The combat experience gained with the PKM directly influenced later improvements in:

  • Longer-range weapons
  • Fire-resistant internal structures
  • Remote-control weapon systems
  • Electronic warfare
  • Guided missiles and rockets
  • Crew protection

The Battles of Yeonpyeong

Chamsuri boats played central roles in the First and Second Battles of Yeonpyeong.

In 1999, Chamsuri-325 and other ROK Navy vessels responded to North Korean ships crossing the Northern Limit Line.

In 2002, Chamsuri-357 fought after receiving a surprise attack from a North Korean patrol craft. Six ROK Navy personnel lost their lives, and their names were later assigned to the first six Yoon Young-ha-class vessels.

The Different Roles of the Three Vessels

Chamsuri-Class PKM

Rapid coastal response and close-range gun combat

PKMR / PKX-B

Guided-rocket defense against fast infiltration and landing craft

Yoon Young-ha-Class PKG

Longer-range anti-ship missile operations against larger surface threats

The evolution can be summarized as:

The Chamsuri fought at close range with guns.
The PKMR intercepts fast coastal threats with guided rockets.
The Yoon Young-ha class attacks larger vessels at longer range with anti-ship missiles.

Introduction

Three Generations Guarding South Korea’s Coastal Front Line

The Chamsuri-class PKM represents decades of frontline coastal patrol and the courage demonstrated in the Battles of Yeonpyeong.

The Yoon Young-ha-class PKG transformed that experience into a larger missile-armed fast attack craft equipped with a 76mm gun, a domestic combat system, waterjet propulsion and enhanced survivability.

The PKMR/PKX-B represents the latest generation, combining 130mm guided rockets, a 76mm naval gun, remote weapon systems and modern electronic warfare in a compact, highly maneuverable coastal platform.

Chamsuri Courage. Yoon Young-ha Resolve. PKMR Precision.

Three Generations. One Mission—Defending Korea’s Seas.

2.5 Batch-I과 Batch-II

Batch-I

PKG / PKX-A

개발사업 명칭은 검독수리-A 또는 PKX-A, 해군 분류는 PKG, Patrol Killer Guided-missile입니다.

PKM
