South Korea’s Premier Defense Systems Series ⑨
Sejong the Great and Jeongjo the Great-Class Aegis Destroyers
Historic Names. Advanced Technology. Korea’s Shield at Sea.
The Republic of Korea Navy operates and is continuing to build two generations of large Aegis guided-missile destroyers under the KDX-III, or Gwanggaeto-III, program.
The first generation is the Sejong the Great class, KDX-III Batch-I. The more advanced second generation is the Jeongjo the Great class, KDX-III Batch-II.
Both classes combine wide-area air defense, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, land-attack capability and fleet command functions. Batch-II adds substantially improved ballistic-missile defense, underwater detection, reduced-signature design and more economical propulsion.
1. What Is an Aegis Destroyer?
An Aegis destroyer is not defined by one radar alone.
The Aegis Combat System integrates radar, computers, command-and-decision software, communications, vertical-launch systems and guided weapons into one coordinated naval combat network.
A typical engagement sequence is:
Detect → Identify → Track → Evaluate → Assign a Weapon → Engage
The system allows a warship to monitor a large area while responding to several types of threats, including:
- Combat aircraft
- Anti-ship cruise missiles
- Ballistic missiles
- Surface warships
- Submarines
- Coordinated multi-directional attacks
The heart of the system is the SPY-1 multifunction phased-array radar, which supports wide-area search, fire-control-quality tracking and ballistic-missile-defense missions. Aegis connects this sensor information with the ship’s weapons and command systems.
Meaning of “Aegis”
The word Aegis comes from the shield of the gods in Greek mythology.
An Aegis destroyer can therefore be described as a shield at sea—a warship designed not only to protect itself but also to defend other ships and forces operating across a wider maritime area.
2. The KDX-III Program
The term Batch refers to an evolutionary stage within the same ship-acquisition program.

5. Major Missions of the Sejong the Great Class
5.1 Wide-Area Fleet Air Defense
The destroyers can detect hostile aircraft and incoming anti-ship missiles at long range, assign defensive weapons and coordinate the protection of accompanying vessels.
Within a naval task group, an Aegis destroyer can provide an air-defense umbrella over:
- Amphibious ships
- Logistics vessels
- Frigates and destroyers
- Submarines operating with the force
- Future carrier or aviation task groups
The Aegis Combat System was developed to integrate surveillance, tracking and weapons control against complex air and missile threats.
5.2 Ballistic-Missile Detection and Tracking
The original Batch-I configuration provides important ballistic-missile detection and tracking functions.
It can monitor a missile’s flight and provide information to command networks and other missile-defense assets. Its original configuration, however, was more focused on detection and tracking than the direct interception capability designed into Batch-II.
5.3 Anti-Surface and Land-Attack Missions
The ships can use anti-ship missiles against hostile surface combatants and land-attack weapons against designated military targets.
Their large size, command facilities and weapons capacity allow them to serve as major offensive as well as defensive platforms.
5.4 Anti-Submarine Warfare
Hull-mounted sonar, towed sonar, embarked helicopters and anti-submarine weapons allow the class to search for, track and engage hostile submarines.
An Aegis destroyer is most effective in anti-submarine warfare when operating with maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters, frigates and other underwater sensors.
6. Jeongjo the Great Class
KDX-III Batch-II
The Jeongjo the Great class is not merely a repeat production of the older ships.
It is an enlarged and substantially modernized design focused on:
- Integrated air and missile defense
- Ballistic-missile interception
- Improved anti-submarine warfare
- Enhanced strategic strike
- Reduced radar and underwater acoustic signatures
- More economical cruising
The class uses the Aegis Baseline 9 family of capabilities, which was developed to integrate conventional air defense and ballistic-missile defense within a common combat system.

The ship’s exact combat load, missile combination and operational inventory can vary according to integration, procurement and mission requirements.
9. Major Improvements in Batch-II
9.1 Ballistic-Missile Interception
The most important difference between the two generations is the expansion from ballistic-missile detection and tracking to a design that supports detection, tracking and interception.
The Jeongjo the Great class is intended to use its modern Aegis system, missile-defense weapons and command networks to engage ballistic threats as part of South Korea’s sea-based missile-defense structure.
A successful interception depends on the complete chain:
Early detection → Accurate tracking → Threat assessment → Weapon assignment → Interceptor launch → Midcourse guidance → Final intercept
The destroyer must therefore operate as part of a broader system involving land-based radar, command networks, other naval units and allied sensors.
9.2 KVLS-II Korean Vertical-Launch System
The Jeongjo the Great class carries the more advanced Korean Vertical Launch System II, or KVLS-II.
Vertical launch systems store missiles vertically inside the hull and allow them to be launched rapidly without turning the ship toward the target.
KVLS-II supports the integration of larger or newer Korean weapons, including planned systems for:
- Long-range fleet air defense
- Ballistic-missile interception
- Land attack
- Anti-submarine warfare
- Future domestically developed guided weapons
DAPA identifies KVLS-II as one of the core systems distinguishing Batch-II from the earlier class.
9.3 South Korean Integrated Sonar Suite
The Jeongjo the Great class carries a domestically developed integrated sonar system combining:
- Hull-mounted sonar
- Low-frequency active towed sonar
- Multifunction passive towed-array sonar
Using several complementary sensors helps the crew distinguish real underwater contacts from background noise and improves its ability to detect submarines and incoming torpedoes.
The official Batch-I and Batch-II comparison identifies the integrated sonar suite as a major improvement in underwater detection.
9.4 Maritime Helicopter Operations
The class can operate the MH-60R Seahawk-class maritime helicopter, providing an airborne extension of the ship’s sensors and weapons.
A maritime helicopter can:
- Deploy sonobuoys
- Use dipping sonar
- Search beyond the ship’s sonar horizon
- Track submarines
- Launch lightweight torpedoes
- Conduct surface surveillance
- Support rescue and transport missions
The helicopter allows the destroyer to investigate possible submarine contacts without having to approach them directly.
9.5 Hybrid Electric Drive
Batch-II adds two Hybrid Electric Drive, HED, units to its four gas turbines.
The gas turbines provide high power for rapid movement and combat operations. Electric propulsion can be used during economical cruising and low-speed missions.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Increased operational endurance
- Lower machinery noise
- Reduced underwater radiated noise
- Improved conditions for anti-submarine operations
- Reduced use of the main turbines during routine sailing
DAPA describes the HED installation as a means of improving fuel efficiency and reducing underwater noise.
9.6 Enhanced Signature Reduction
The Jeongjo the Great class has a larger hull than Batch-I but incorporates improved shaping and system arrangement to reduce its detectability.
Naval signature management involves reducing:
- Radar reflections
- Infrared emissions
- Underwater machinery noise
- Propeller and water-flow noise
- Unnecessary electromagnetic emissions
Stealth at sea does not make a large destroyer invisible. It makes the ship more difficult to detect, classify, target or track under certain conditions. DAPA states that the Batch-II design provides improved stealth performance over the Sejong the Great class.
10. Batch-I and Batch-II: Key Comparison
| Capability | Sejong the Great Class | Jeongjo the Great Class |
|---|---|---|
| Primary development goal | Establish a powerful Korean Aegis fleet | Strengthen integrated air and missile defense |
| Ballistic-missile role | Primarily detection and tracking | Detection, tracking and interception |
| Aegis generation | Earlier configuration | Baseline 9-family system |
| Underwater sensors | Hull and passive towed sonar | Integrated hull, active and passive towed sonar |
| Propulsion | Four gas turbines | Four gas turbines plus two HED units |
| Economical low-speed operation | Gas-turbine-based | Electric drive available |
| Signature reduction | Incorporated | Further enhanced |
| Strategic strike | Land-attack capability | Expanded future land-attack capability |
| Anti-submarine aviation | Maritime helicopter | Optimized for MH-60R-class operations |
| Central strategic value | Powerful fleet-defense shield | Shield, missile interceptor and strategic strike platform |
The difference can be summarized this way:
The Sejong the Great class is a powerful fleet-defense shield. The Jeongjo the Great class develops that shield into a platform capable of missile interception, enhanced underwater warfare and expanded strategic strike.
11. Why Are the Ships Named After Historic Figures?
The Republic of Korea Navy traditionally names destroyers after historical figures who made major contributions to national development, defense, unity or the overcoming of national crises.
The purpose is to connect each ship’s modern defense mission with the values represented by its namesake.
Sejong the Great
King Sejong represents scientific advancement, cultural achievement, public welfare and the strengthening of the Korean state.
Yulgok Yi I
Yi I represents scholarship, reform and preparation for future national-security threats.
Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong
Ryu Seong-ryong represents responsible state leadership and the effort to overcome the national crisis of the Imjin War.
Jeongjo the Great
King Jeongjo represents reform, national strength, scholarship and the advancement of science and technology.
Dasan Jeong Yak-yong
Jeong Yak-yong represents practical learning, technological innovation, administrative reform and concern for the lives of ordinary people. The Navy selected his name to reflect his spirit of innovation and public service.
Daeho Kim Jongseo
General Kim Jongseo helped secure and expand the Joseon Dynasty’s northern frontier through the establishment of the Six Garrisons near the Tumen River.
The title Daeho, meaning “Great Tiger,” was included to symbolize the destroyer’s strength, agility and determination to defend national sovereignty.
12. Role in the Republic of Korea Navy
Fleet Air-Defense Command
An Aegis destroyer can coordinate air-defense operations for an entire naval formation by sharing sensor and targeting information with other ships and aircraft.
Ballistic-Missile Warning and Defense
The destroyers can detect and track ballistic missiles, transmit warning information and support South Korea’s wider missile-defense network. Batch-II is designed to extend this mission into direct sea-based interception.
Anti-Submarine Warfare
The ships use sonar, maritime helicopters, torpedoes and information from patrol aircraft and allied forces to locate underwater threats.
Anti-Surface and Land Attack
Anti-ship and land-attack weapons allow the destroyers to engage hostile naval units and designated strategic targets.
Multinational and Blue-Water Operations
Their size, communications equipment and command facilities allow them to support multinational operations far from the Korean Peninsula.
ROKS Jeongjo the Great’s deployment to RIMPAC 2026 demonstrated the class’s role in long-distance combined naval operations.
13. South Korea’s Future Six-Ship Aegis Fleet
When all three Jeongjo the Great-class ships are delivered, the Republic of Korea Navy is expected to operate:
- Three Sejong the Great-class Batch-I destroyers
- Three Jeongjo the Great-class Batch-II destroyers
- Six Aegis destroyers in total
This does not mean that all six ships will always be available simultaneously. Warships require maintenance, training, certification and crew rotation.
A six-ship fleet provides greater flexibility to keep Aegis capability deployed while other ships undergo maintenance or training. This total follows from the three operational Batch-I ships and the three-ship Batch-II construction program.
14. Major Strengths
① Wide-Area Detection and Tracking
The SPY-1 phased-array radar and Aegis combat system provide continuous surveillance and rapid target tracking.
② Simultaneous Multi-Threat Response
The combat system can coordinate defensive action against multiple air and missile threats while the ship continues surface and underwater missions.
③ Powerful Fleet Air Defense
Long-range surface-to-air weapons allow the destroyer to protect other ships rather than relying only on short-range self-defense.
④ Ballistic-Missile Defense Growth
Batch-II expands South Korea’s sea-based role from missile warning and tracking toward integrated interception.
⑤ Enhanced Anti-Submarine Warfare
The domestic integrated sonar suite, HED propulsion and MH-60R-class helicopter operations significantly strengthen underwater surveillance.
⑥ Strategic Strike Potential
Korean vertical-launch systems provide a foundation for long-range land-attack and future domestically developed guided weapons.
⑦ Domestic Shipbuilding Capability
The ships are designed and built in South Korea, with Korean sonar, propulsion-support technology, vertical-launch systems and guided weapons integrated alongside the U.S.-developed Aegis system.
15. Important Limitations
High Acquisition and Operating Costs
Large Aegis destroyers require major investment in construction, fuel, trained crews, missiles, maintenance and combat-system upgrades.
One Ship Cannot Defend Every Area
Radar coverage and missile capacity are finite. The ships must operate with aircraft, land-based sensors, other warships and missile-defense systems.
Saturation Attacks Remain Dangerous
Large numbers of missiles, drones and decoys approaching from several directions can challenge any naval defense system.
Submarines Remain a Serious Threat
Even the most advanced surface ship can be threatened by a quiet submarine operating in difficult underwater conditions.
Batch-I Requires Continued Modernization
The Sejong the Great class remains highly capable, but its combat system, electronic warfare, data links and missile-defense functions require continued upgrading as threats evolve.
An Aegis destroyer is therefore not an invulnerable battleship. It is most powerful when operating as part of an integrated naval, air and missile-defense network.
16. Strategic Significance
The two classes combine multiple national-defense functions in one platform:
Wide-area surveillance
Fleet air defense
Ballistic-missile warning and interception
Anti-submarine warfare
Anti-surface warfare
Precision land attack
Multinational command and control
Sea-lane protection
Strategic deterrence
The Sejong the Great class established South Korea as an operational Aegis navy.
The Jeongjo the Great class advances that capability toward integrated air and missile defense, improved undersea warfare and more independent Korean weapon integration.
Together, they form the most powerful surface-combat element of the Republic of Korea Navy.

- 세종대왕급 Batch-I: 3척
