What Visa Does a Foreigner Need to Work in South Korea?
A foreign national must hold a visa and status of stay that specifically permits the type of work they will perform in Korea.
A tourist entry, K-ETA, visa waiver, or ordinary short-term visitor visa does not normally authorize employment. Even unpaid or overseas-paid work may require work authorization when the actual purpose of the trip is to perform services in Korea.
1. C-4: Short-Term Employment
The C-4 visa is intended for temporary income-generating activities lasting no more than 90 days.
Typical activities include:
- Temporary performances
- Advertising and modeling
- Paid lectures or speeches
- Short-term research
- Technical support
- Athletic or entertainment events
- Temporary professional projects
A person may still need a C-4 visa even when being paid by a company outside Korea, if the purpose of entering Korea is to perform work.
2. E-1: Professor
For foreign nationals employed to teach or conduct academic work at colleges, universities, graduate schools, or comparable educational institutions.
Examples include university professors, visiting professors, and academic teaching personnel.
3. E-2: Foreign Language Instructor
For qualified foreign nationals teaching conversational foreign languages at authorized schools, language institutes, or educational organizations.
Examples include:
- English conversation instructors
- Native-speaking assistant teachers
- Language academy instructors
Nationality, degree, criminal-record, health, and document-authentication requirements may apply.
4. E-3: Researcher
For researchers working in natural science, engineering, industrial technology, or advanced research.
Examples include researchers employed by corporate laboratories, government-funded institutes, universities, biotechnology companies, semiconductor companies, and AI research organizations.
5. E-4: Technical Instructor
For foreign specialists who provide advanced technical guidance or transfer specialized industrial technology to a Korean organization.
Examples include specialists in manufacturing systems, industrial equipment, advanced production methods, and specialized engineering technology.
6. E-5: Professional Employment
For licensed professionals working in fields recognized under Korean law.
Examples may include:
- Physicians
- Attorneys
- Accountants
- Aircraft pilots
- Other legally regulated professionals
A foreign professional license does not automatically authorize professional practice in Korea. Korean licensing or recognition requirements may also apply.
7. E-6: Arts, Entertainment and Sports
For foreign nationals engaging in income-generating artistic, entertainment, performance, modeling, or professional sports activities.
Examples include singers, actors, dancers, performers, models, professional athletes, and coaches.
Short engagements may use C-4, while continuing employment may require E-6.
8. E-7: Specially Designated Activities
The E-7 visa is widely used by Korean companies hiring foreign professionals with designated knowledge, skills, or technical expertise.
It is divided into:
- E-7-1: Professional Workers
- E-7-2: Semi-Professional Workers
- E-7-3: General Skilled Workers
- E-7-4: Skilled Workers
Common E-7-1 occupations may include software developers, engineers, designers, overseas sales specialists, technical experts, and designated managers.
Eligibility depends on whether the occupation is approved, whether the applicant’s education and experience relate to the position, the salary, the employer’s business condition, and other immigration requirements.
9. E-8: Seasonal Worker
For seasonal employment in agriculture and fisheries.
Typical work includes crop planting, harvesting, orchard work, seafood production, and primary processing.
Applicants are usually recruited through authorized seasonal-worker programs involving local governments and approved employers rather than through ordinary private job searches. The statutory maximum period is currently eight months, although the actual authorized period depends on the program and contract.
10. E-9: Non-Professional Employment
The E-9 visa operates under Korea’s Employment Permit System.
It covers authorized jobs in industries such as:
- Manufacturing
- Agriculture and livestock
- Fisheries
- Construction
- Certain service sectors
Applicants must generally be nationals of countries participating in the EPS system and complete the official recruitment, examination, and employer-assignment process.
Employment is restricted to authorized industries and workplaces.
11. E-10: Crew Employment
For foreign nationals employed under a seafarer employment contract to work aboard eligible Korean vessels.
Maritime employment and vessel-specific regulations apply in addition to immigration requirements.
12. D-7: Intra-Company Transferee
For employees transferred from an overseas company to its Korean branch, subsidiary, liaison office, headquarters, or related organization.
This visa is appropriate for an existing overseas employee being assigned to Korea. A person newly hired directly by a Korean company may be more likely to require an E-7 visa.
13. D-8: Corporate Investment or Technology Startup
For foreign investors, essential specialists of foreign-invested companies, qualified venture investors, and technology startup founders.
Immigration authorities may review:
- The actual investment
- Overseas remittance records
- Ownership structure
- Business premises
- Business plan
- The applicant’s experience
- Whether the company is genuinely operating
Simply registering a small business does not automatically qualify a person for D-8 status.
14. D-9: International Trade and Business Management
For qualified foreign nationals managing a company, conducting international trade, or carrying out certain equipment-installation and industrial activities.
D-9 is often associated with export-import operations and trade management, while D-8 is more closely connected with foreign investment and technology startups.
15. D-10: Job Seeker
For qualified applicants seeking professional employment in fields corresponding to E-1 through E-7 or preparing a technology startup.
Permitted activities may include:
- Job searching
- Employment interviews
- Professional training
- Certain approved internships
- Technology startup preparation
Applicants generally need qualifying education and sufficient points. Certain recent graduates of Korean institutions with qualifying Korean-language credentials may be exempt from the points requirement.
The D-10 visa is not a general open work permit. Once regular employment is secured, the applicant normally needs to change to the appropriate employment status.
16. H-1: Working Holiday
For young nationals of countries or regions that have a working-holiday agreement with Korea.
The principal purpose must be an extended holiday and cultural experience, with temporary employment used to help fund the stay.
Age limits, annual quotas, working hours, study limits, and maximum employment with one employer vary by nationality. Korea’s general program guidance states that participants may work up to 25 hours per week, subject to the relevant bilateral agreement.
17. H-2: Work and Visit
For eligible overseas Koreans from designated countries who wish to visit Korea and work in permitted industries.
This is not a general work visa available to all foreign nationals. Employment education, reporting, permitted-industry rules, and occupational restrictions apply.
18. Employment Under F Status
F-2: Resident
Allows relatively broad employment and business activity, although restrictions may apply depending on the specific F-2 category.
F-4: Overseas Korean
Allows broad employment and business activity, but simple labor and certain restricted occupations are prohibited.
F-5: Permanent Resident
Generally provides unrestricted employment rights under immigration law.
F-6: Marriage Migrant
Generally allows employment without occupational restrictions for a foreign spouse of a Korean citizen.
19. Part-Time Work for D-2 and D-4 Students
International students do not automatically have permission to work.
D-2 students and qualifying D-4 trainees must receive prior permission for part-time employment and comply with limits concerning working hours, occupation, academic performance, attendance, and Korean-language ability.
Important Final Note
Visa eligibility depends on the applicant’s nationality, education, experience, occupation, salary, employer, workplace, contract, and intended period of stay. Requirements can also be revised through Ministry of Justice notices and consular instructions.
Applicants should confirm their exact category through the Korea Visa Portal, Hi Korea, the Korean embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over their residence, or the Immigration Contact Center at 1345 in Korea or +82-2-1345 from overseas. Hi Korea currently provides visa manuals, employment-eligibility checks, online applications, and immigration-office reservations.
Short-Term Employment

Arts, Entertainment and Sports

General Skilled Workers
Skilled Worker
Seasonal Worker
Non-Professional Employment
Crew Employment
Intra-Company Transferee
Corporate Investment / Technology Startup
International Trade and Business Management
Job Seeker Visa
Working Holiday
Work and Visit
Resident
Permanent Resident
Marriage Migrant
