ADMIRAL YI SUN-SIN SERIES — PART 2
THE MAN WHO SAW THE WAR COMING
Before Admiral Yi Sun-sin became the undefeated commander who saved Korea, he was a soldier who refused to compromise his principles.
Yi Sun-sin would not bend to corruption. He rejected unjust demands, even when they came from powerful men.
Because of his honesty, he was falsely blamed, stripped of his rank, and forced to serve as an ordinary soldier. This punishment was known as “Baegui Jonggun”—military service without official rank.
But Yi did not complain.
He did not abandon his country.
He endured humiliation, continued serving faithfully, and earned his way back through courage and duty.
In 1591, Yi Sun-sin was appointed Naval Commander of Left Jeolla Province. The defense of Korea’s southern seas now rested in his hands.
While many officials ignored the growing threat from Japan, Yi prepared for war.
He inspected warships, strengthened coastal defenses, trained sailors, secured cannons and gunpowder, gathered military supplies, and studied the tides and sea routes.
Together with skilled officers and shipbuilders, including Na Dae-yong, he prepared the turtle ship for combat.
Before the enemy arrived, Yi Sun-sin had already begun building the navy that would save a nation.
Others hoped that war would never come.
Yi Sun-sin made sure Korea would be ready when it did.
When war finally came, Admiral Yi Sun-sin was prepared.
